Mesima, a.k.a. 'Black
Hoof Fungus,' is common on broadleaf trees in the southern United States and other
sub-tropical and tropical parts of the world. It often grows on oaks, mulberries and
poplars. Unlike most of our medicinal mushrooms with
historical use in China or Japan, Mesima extract has primarily been used
in Korea to prevent the recurrence of cancer. |

A study by Kim et al. in 1996 found that polysaccharides extracted
from the mycelium of Mesima had a wider spectrum of activity and anti-tumor effects
than polysaccharides from other species of mushrooms. 4 Another study in
2000 at Seoul University, also comparing different species of mushrooms, found that Mesima
extract showed the highest rate of tumor inhibition against Sarcoma 180,
a 96.7% inhibition rate, and also helped the rapid recovery of the immune system
after chemotherapy to near normal conditions. 501
A study on lung cancer found that Mesima extract
in combination with conventional drugs helped decrease tumor growth and metastasis. 12
Many other studies have concluded that Mesima extract
possesses powerful anti-tumor 503, 504, 505, 506 and immune
enhancing 2, 3, 4 properties.
In his book "Mycelium Running," medicinal mushroom expert
Paul Stamets also lists the following areas where research has shown Mesima
extract to have a beneficial effect on: Bacteria; Viruses; Inflammation;
Cervical Cancer; Uterine Cancer; Colorectal Cancers; Gastric
Cancer; Liver Cancer; Melanoma. 134
